SIKKIM-MOODS OF THE MOUNTAIN

“Mountains Aren’t Funny, They Are Hill-areas”

Travel has become a trend now. With the increase in the use of social media, more people are being inspired by travel vloggers and influencers to visit different places across the world. The Himalayas has always been a great place to visit. Sikkim being part of the eastern Himalayas is notable for its mesmerizing view of nature and climate. During my recent visit to the state of Sikkim over 7 days, I tried to develop a series based on how due to the change of light and temperature, nature changes its look and the ranges reflect that. I experienced a blissful sight, as the time passes in the day, the same range can depict contrasting features and moods. It mirrors striking colors.

Sikkim, set on the elevation of 280m and being a land of peace and tranquillity, the hills set the perfect set of mind for the people visiting the place. The diversity of the place is highlighted by the people living there and the environment. The tall structures give a sense of calmness to watch how it frames the mind of people visiting the place. Even being lifeless, these summits emit human emotions. I think mountains may bring out certain characteristics in people to varying degrees, resulting in a large geographical trend. It elicits new experiences by highlighting people's individuality. In a week, I have tried to account for such various emotions of the mountains which could relate to human characteristics.

Travel is not my passion or hobby, but I like to visit places and know the people and the culture and it is a mere attempt to show my version of the places I go. This documentation is not of one particular summit but a mix of various peaks which could justify my topic. Due to a time crunch, it was impossible to visit the entire state, so the photographs are loosely based around the cities of –Gangtok, Yamthung valley & Lachung. It is just a pictorial essay of the massifs.

One journey ends to start another. The Himalayas are rich in their aesthetic. I hope to make some series on another part of it in some other state of India. Till then enjoy the current moods of mountains.
